TCOM’s Operational Class Aerostat System, equipped with radar and EOIR payloads can provide Malaysian security forces with actionable information to achieve total domain awareness and early detection of potential threats in a contested region of Borneo.
Columbia, MD – October 1, 2014 –TCOM, L.P., the global leader in persistent surveillance solutions announced that its President, Ron Bendlin has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bintang Kencana during the U.S. – Malaysia Business Forum in New York City that was witnessed by the Malaysian Prime Minister The Honourable Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Hj Abdul Razak while in New York for the United Nations General Assembly. The MoU signifies TCOM’s desire to provide the Malaysian government with aerostat systems for maritime domain awareness over the contested Sabah territory of the island of Borneo. TCOM was one of only six U.S. companies in attendance at the forum, and is the only defense systems provider among the group.
TCOM’s persistent surveillance aerostat systems can provide Malaysian security forces with comprehensive maritime surveillance, operating around the clock, solving critical domain awareness challenges in an area where armed incursions into Sabah are common.
“We are honored to be invited to attend this Business Forum as we seek to provide a cost-effective and reliable solution to enhance security and improve safety for Malaysia and its citizens,” stated Ron Bendlin, TCOM President. “We are fully committed to working as trusted partners with our strong allies in Malaysia.”
The Sabah region of northern Borneo is Malaysian territory, though Malaysia’s claim to the area is disputed by a group of citizens from the Southern Philippines. This dispute creates a real and pervasive threat to the safety of Malaysian citizens. These aggressors typically use small wooden boats to travel stealthily into Sabah from the Southern Philippines. These craft often pass undetected by conventional ground-based radar, and move completely unseen under the cover of darkness. TCOM’s elevated surveillance solutions can monitor these waterways around the clock, day or night.
TCOM operational class aerostat systems are the ideal solution for Malaysian security forces’ surveillance challenges. The systems are optimized for the maritime domain, and are equipped with advanced sensor payloads including radar and Electro-Optical Infrared (EOIR) day/night cameras that relay accurate, actionable data to decision makers. Security forces will be able to detect threats that would have previously gone unseen. Further, forces will be able to detect threats more quickly, which enables more time to evaluate, engage and neutralize the threat.
“TCOM’s aerostat systems can empower Malaysian security forces to have complete domain awareness, 24/7,” added Bendlin. “Leaders will have actionable intelligence to guide more effective decisions, keep citizens safe and territory secure.”
The MoU is the first step in the procurement and delivery of TCOM’s aerostat system, which will be provided through TCOM’s local Malaysian partner, Kencana Defence an entity under Bintang Kencana Group of Companies, that will manage deployment, operation and maintenance of the system. TCOM President Ron Bendlin presented Prime Minister, The Honourable Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Hj AbdulRazak with a scale model of an aerostat as a symbol of appreciation of the company’s commitment and long-term partnership.
